Subaru Is Now Letting Owners Factory-Upgrade Their WRX and STI
Upgrade Service Takes Center StageWhen Subaru presented its lineup at the Tokyo Auto Salon, enthusiast reaction was mixed. Many expected a major STI announcement. Instead, the more consequential reveal was the expansion of the Subaru Upgrade Service. The program now includes factory-backed hardware retrofits for existing owners, including models from 2015 and earlier. Just last week, Subaru opened pre-orders for three hardware packages first previewed at the show. These follow earlier software upgrades, such as the Active Damper e-Tune for the Levorg and the Sport Drive e-Tune for the BRZ. The new offerings are the Subaru Dynamic Motion Package, Subaru Comfort Quiet Package, and Subaru Ultrasuede Package. Reservations run through March 31 via the official Subaru Upgrade Service site. Delivery and installation for pre-order customers are scheduled for April 2026. It replaces the front suspension lower arm with a pillow-ball bush design similar to the setup in the Subaru WRX S4. A revised curved tie rod end is also fitted. Subaru recalibrates fastening torque across the suspension to match the new components and correct vehicle posture. The result is a sharper cornering response with retained ride comfort. Pricing is ¥132,000, or approximately $862, including tax. The Comfort Quiet Package, also for the WRX Wagon, adds vibration-damping and sound-absorbing materials to the doors, roof, and wheelhouses. Road and rain noise are reduced. Audio tuning is optimized for clearer cabin acoustics. Pricing is ¥80,300, or about $525. The Ultrasuede Package extends to the previous-generation WRX Wagon, WRX S4, WRX STI, Forester, Impreza, and the XV, which is known in many markets, including the US, as the Crosstrek. It introduces Ultrasuede-wrapped steering wheels and shift knobs in dark navy or burgundy while retaining EyeSight and airbag functionality. Pricing converts to roughly $561 for the full set, $431 for the steering wheel alone, and $151 for the shift knob. Subaru Japan View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article OEM Over AftermarketThese upgrades are not inexpensive. However, they are developed, validated, and warranted by Subaru itself. They are engineered to integrate with factory safety systems and specific chassis codes. That distinguishes them from typical aftermarket solutions. Strategically, this program pushes back against planned obsolescence. Instead of directing owners toward a new purchase, Subaru provides a structured way to refine and modernize existing vehicles. It supports long-term ownership and strengthens brand equity. The concept is sound. Now, the enthusiast community waits for one more thing: a true next-generation STI. It's unclear whether the Subaru Upgrade Service will become available in the US. We certainly hope so, given the host of following the brand has stateside. One of Australia’s Most Stolen Cars Doesn’t Even Exist
Odd Theft Reports in AustraliaNo country is immune to car thefts, and in the Australian state of Victoria, the most stolen car there is the Holden Commodore. Of course, it's not really a surprise given that it's a hugely popular model. More specifically, it's the 2016 model of the midsize sedan that was stolen the most. Also known as the VF Commodore, America got it as the Chevrolet SS, and as a big sedan with rear-wheel drive, we understand the appeal. Of course, we don't condone stealing a car. Meanwhile, the Toyota Corolla came in second place. Again, Corollas are everywhere, so it doesn't really come as a surprise. But in 14th place is a car, a Toyota model that doesn't even exist. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Toyota Lantra. We can see your puzzled faces from here. The Toyota What?According to a report by Drive, the 14th-most-stolen car in Victoria is the Toyota Lantra. Not even Google or AI can help you out with that, as there is no such car as that. Oddly enough, the ghost car was reportedly stolen 183 times in 2025. Funnier still is the fact that there is a specific model year for the most-stolen version of the Toyota Lantra, 2013 to be exact, with 69 of the imaginary cars yanked from their owners. We're seriously wondering what the previous models looked like. But the weirdest statistic has to be the rise in thefts for this, quite literally, unobtanium model. In 2024, there were 64 thefts for the Lantra, meaning there's an increase of 65% in reported cases. Better keep those doors locked, owners. Other Non-Existent Models in the ListAnother nonexistent car stolen was the Mazda Elite. Again, we have no idea what it is because Mazda doesn't make that car. Apparently, 23 of them were stolen last year. No specific model year was given for the stolen Elites. That said, it may be a trim level for certain Mazda models, but the company doesn't use the Elite name in Australia. An older model like a 323 or 626, perhaps? That's not all, though, as a Mitsubishi Elite also went missing last year, as well as a Dennis Elite. And, going back to the Lantra, there was a single Holden Lantra stolen in the state in 2025, as well as a Honda Lantra. Seriously, someone better trademark those names. Mazda Source of Confusion? It's possible that the Lantra in question is the Hyundai Elantra. However, it still doesn't answer the question of why it was labeled as a Toyota. Hyundai sold the Lantra back in the day, and it was used as the name for the Elantra in certain markets, including Australia. Based on the report, the Lantra was classified as a sedan, so that's a plausible explanation. Could it be that some owners who reported their car stolen do not know the make of their vehicle? It's odd, yes, but not outside the realm of possibility. Mind you, we're referring to the previous generation of Elantra here, as the current model sold in Australia is badged as the i30. We'll probably never know the answer for sure, but it's a clerical error that won't make finding the stolen cars any easier. Hyundai View the full article

Several Major Storm Warnings Wreak Havoc: 60 MPH Winds, SFO Delays, 40+ Inches of Snow
It is Presidents' Day, traditionally a busy travel holiday, but Mother Nature has other plans for a vast swath of the United States today, February 16, 2026. Major weather systems are causing havoc on both coasts and in the deep South, turning highways into hazard zones and grounding flights. For automotive enthusiasts and everyday commuters alike, understanding these conditions means knowing when to park the car and, if you must drive, how your vehicle interacts with the elements. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the major weather events unfolding right now, followed by critical advice on navigating bad weather and the literal foundation of your safety on the road: your tires. G Northern California: The "Level 2" Bay Area Soaker and Sierra BurialA potent, dynamic storm system is currently slamming Northern California, categorized by meteorologists as a "Level 2" event. This system is bringing a dangerous cocktail of heavy urban rain, severe coastal winds, and massive mountain snowfall. The Bay Area ImpactFor drivers in the San Francisco Bay Area, the commute is treacherous. Moderate to heavy rainfall is causing slick roads and ponding in low-lying areas. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect, meaning high tides combined with storm surge could inundate coastal parking lots and roads adjacent to the bay. The wind is perhaps the greatest hazard for high-profile vehicles today. A Wind Advisory covers coastal zones like Monterey and Big Sur, where gusts are screaming between 50 and 60 mph. These crosswinds can easily push SUVs, trucks, and vans out of their lanes on exposed bridges and coastal highways. SFO DelaysThe weather is also crippling air travel. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has implemented a Ground Delay Program due to low cloud ceilings and high winds. As of midday, over 174 flights have been delayed, with average wait times exceeding an hour, meaning more travelers may be forced onto the already soaked roads. Related: Stunning 1953 Chevrolet 3100 For Sale At Just $... The Sierra Nevada ConnectionThe same moisture-laden system is colliding with the Sierra Nevada, resulting in dangerous blizzard conditions. Interstate 80, the critical artery connecting Northern California to Nevada, is facing severe restrictions. Chain controls are active, and officials are describing travel as "dangerous to near impossible." The snowfall projections are staggering. Donner Summit is expected to receive up to 4 feet of snow, while some higher-elevation ski resorts could see upwards of 5 feet by the time the storm winds down. If you do not have a 4WD vehicle equipped with dedicated snow tires and chains, do not attempt travel into the high Sierras today. Southern California Mountains: From Rain to Whiteout BlizzardFurther south, the same energy trough is impacting Southern California, creating a stark divide between the coast and the mountains. While the Los Angeles basin deals with rain, the local mountains—specifically the San Gabriel and San Bernardino ranges, including areas near Big Bear and Wrightwood—are under a major Winter Storm Warning that runs through Wednesday. Today, snow levels are hovering around 6,000 to 6,500 feet, but cold-air advection will drop them significantly tonight through Tuesday, bringing snow down to 4,500 feet. This means major mountain passes, such as the Grapevine (I-5), could see accumulations. At higher elevations, this is a full-blown blizzard. Forecasts call for up to 2 feet of snow accumulation. However, the snow is only half the story. This system is packing incredibly powerful winds, with sustained speeds of 25-45 mph and gusts expected to hit 60 mph today, potentially reaching 70 mph on exposed ridges by Tuesday. The combination of heavy, falling snow and hurricane-force gusts will create near-zero-visibility whiteout conditions. Travel is highly discouraged. Furthermore, below the snow line, heavy rain on steep terrain has triggered a Flood Watch, with a high risk of rockslides and mudslides that could block canyon roads. Photo by Antoni Pytel on Getty Images The Southeast: Tornado Aftermath and Lingering ThreatsWhile the West Coast deals with water in its frozen and liquid forms, the Southeast is recovering from violent atmospheric instability that struck over the weekend. A severe weather outbreak that began late Saturday and continued into Sunday produced multiple tornadoes across Mississippi and Louisiana. The area around Lake Charles, Louisiana, sustained significant damage. High winds and tornadic activity were powerful enough to overturn a horse trailer, destroy large metal awnings, and snap power poles near towns like Jena and Donaldsonville. As of Monday morning, crews are still working to restore electricity, with thousands of customers remaining in the dark across Louisiana and Mississippi. Today, that energy has shifted east. The severe threat has diminished significantly as the system moved into South Georgia and the Florida Panhandle, transitioning from Tornado Warnings to Watches. While the immediate tornado threat is lower today, the system is still producing heavy rain and gusty winds as it exits the coast. Northern Florida is currently experiencing over 12,000 power outages, so drivers must treat dark intersections as four-way stops. Driving in Severe WeatherWhen half the country is facing severe weather, the best advice is usually "stay home." But if you must drive, you need to adjust your technique drastically. 1. The Golden Rule: Slow Down and Back Off It sounds obvious, but speed is the number one enemy in low-traction environments. Your stopping distance increases exponentially on wet or icy roads. Increase your following distance from the standard three seconds to at least six to eight seconds. You need that buffer zone if the car in front of you spins out. 2. Kill the Cruise Control. Never use cruise control on wet, icy, or snowy roads. If your tires hit a patch of standing water and hydroplane, cruise control will detect the sudden loss of resistance and attempt to accelerate to maintain speed, causing a violent and often unrecoverable spin. You need full manual control of the throttle. 3. Managing Hydroplaning If you hit standing water and feel the steering wheel go light (hydroplaning), do not slam on the brakes. Panic braking will lock up the wheels and ensure a loss of control. Instead, immediately lift off the accelerator and gently steer in the direction you want to go. Wait for the tires to re-engage with the pavement before applying gentle throttle. 4. Visibility is Key If your windshield wipers are on, your headlights must be on. It’s the law in many states, but it’s common sense everywhere. It’s not just for you to see; it’s so others can see you in the spray. In heavy fog or falling snow, use low beams or fog lights; high beams will reflect off the precipitation and blind you. G A Tire Deep DiveAll the electronic aids in a modern car, like ABS, traction control, and stability control, rely entirely on four patches of rubber the size of your hand connecting you to the road. In weather like today's, your tires are your life preservers. The Tread Depth CheckYou've heard of the "penny test" (inserting a penny into the tread to see Lincoln's head). Forget it. That test at 2/32 inches, which is the legal minimum but utterly unsafe in heavy rain or snow. Use the "quarter test." Insert a quarter upside down into your tread grooves. If you can see the top of Washington's head, you have less than 4/32nds of an inch of tread remaining. You need new tires immediately. Deep tread grooves are essential for evacuating water; without them, your tire will surf on top of the water (hydroplane) at surprisingly low speeds. Understand Your Tire TypeThe "All-Season" tires that came on your car are generally "three-season" tires. They start to harden and lose grip when temperatures drop below 45°F (7°C), even on dry pavement. All-Weather Tires: A step up, these carry the "Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake" (3PMSF) symbol, indicating they meet certain severe snow service standards. They are better than standard all-season tires in cold weather.Dedicated Winter Tires: If you are driving near the Sierras or SoCal mountains today, these are essential. They use specialized rubber compounds that stay pliable in freezing temperatures and feature aggressive siping (tiny slits in the tread) that bite into ice.Check Your PressureFinally, cold air compresses. For every 10-degree drop in outside temperature, your tire pressure can drop by 1-2 PSI. If you haven't checked your pressure since the weather turned cold, your tires are likely underinflated, which compromises grip, increases wear, and can lead to catastrophic blowouts. Every time the Daytona 500 champion only led a single lap
In 68 editions of the Daytona 500, NASCAR has seen plenty of surprise or unexpected winners. However, it wasn't until 2017 that the victor in stock car racing's crown jewel event only led the final lap of the 200-lap battle. While it did not happen once between 1959 and 2016, the phenomenon has now occurred four times in the last decade. It showcases just how unpredictable modern superspeedway ...Keep readingView the full article

Spied: Hardcore Ferrari 296 Challenge Stradale Could Drop Hybrid Power
A new supercar has been spied outside the Maranello gates, and it's set to be Ferrari's most hardcore road-going version of the 296 super sports car yet. What's more, it may ditch the hybrid system to lower weight and increase engagement and appeal. In 2021, we got the 296 GTB as the new entry point to Ferrari ownership, and last year, the 296 Speciale arrived. Ferrari normally only produces two versions of a single model, but that may be changing with this, rumored to be called the Ferrari 296 Challenge Stradale. Could a road-going race car be one of the five cars Ferrari reveals this year? Stradale means road, and this camouflaged development vehicle hasn't been spied on a track... What to Expect from the Third Ferrari 296 Road Car Derek Cornelissen/Instagram View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article If you know your Ferrari lore, you'll know that the CS suffix, last seen on the 360 model line, bridges two worlds: motorsport and the road. These images from Derek Photography seem to show just that. While the overall package looks like something meant to live on a track, we don't see the quick-release hood latches, slick rubber, or polycarbonate windows of the 296 Challenge, a racecar that ditches the GTB's hybrid gubbins and is built for a one-make series entered by Ferrari's wealthiest gentleman racers. What we do see are parking sensors, a license plate, and road-legal treaded tires on a new design of wheel. A new front fascia not shared with the existing GTB, Speciale, GT3, or Challenge models is also worth noting, though the enormous swan-neck rear wing and the vented hood seem to be from the latter racer. A pair of exhaust tips within a see-through mesh fascia adds to the hardcore nature of this Fezza, but the cabin appears not to be stripped out, further hinting at its destiny as a road car. Thus, this seems to effectively be the 296 Challenge with some road manners. Non-Hybrid Ferrari 296 Powertrain Rumored Derek Cornelissen/Instagram View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article According to both the photographer responsible for these images and The Supercar Blog, this prototype heralds the first non-hybrid Ferrari 296 for the road. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 in the 296 Speciale makes 690 horsepower on its own (total output in the electrified powertrain is 858 hp), up from 654 in the GTB (819 hp total), thanks to forged pistons and a titanium crankshaft lifted from the F80 hypercar, but less power wouldn't matter, particularly not if Ferrari makes this even rarer than the limited Speciale variant. The highly collectible Daytona SP3 is built on the bones of the LaFerrari Aperta, and losing electric motors hasn't impacted its desirability. The same would be true of a combustion-only 296, which could be one of the last of its kind. The only element of this prototype that seems in need of change for production is the camouflage, so a reveal is surely coming soon. Not too soon, though. The 296 Speciale has only just started reaching customers, and Motor1 says the new 296 CS could debut at the Finali Mondiali event in Barcelona, Spain, around mid-November. View the full article

How taxes are causing insane gas prices for one unlucky state
If you’ve driven across the border from St. Louis into Illinois or crossed into the state from Wisconsin, you’ve likely felt the immediate, painful sting of a price hike at the pump. As of mid-February 2026, the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is hovering around $2.92, but Illinois remains a stubborn outlier. Several data points push the state’s average closer to $3.01, while neighboring states like Missouri and Iowa have prices as low as $2.53 recently. It’s a persistent issue for Illinois drivers. This pricing disparity isn't just a fluke of the market or a result of you visiting a station with unusually high gas prices. It is the result of a complex, layered system of taxation and regulation that makes Illinois one of the most expensive places in the Midwest to fuel up. Here’s what’s going on in Illinois - not just Chicago. The automatic annual excise tax increaseIllinois residents are currently dealing with a gas tax structure that is designed to go up, and only up. In 2019, the state's motor fuel tax doubled to 38 cents per gallon; the real kicker was a provision that ties future tax increases to the Consumer Price Index. As of January 1, 2026, the gas excise tax sits at roughly 48 cents per gallon, a figure that automatically adjusts every July 1st without requiring a new vote from the legislature. This approach to taxation means that even when global oil prices stabilize, Illinois drivers face a rising floor for what they pay. While neighboring states like Missouri and Indiana have also adjusted their taxes to fund infrastructure, neither raises prices as high or as often as Illinois. This predictable upward trend ensures that Illinois remains among the three most-taxed states for fuel in the nation. Bloomberg/Getty Images Illinois taxes its taxesUnlike most states that charge a flat excise tax per gallon, Illinois is one of only a handful of states that apply a percentage-based sales tax on top of the fuel price. This creates a "tax on a tax" situation where the state's 6.25% sales tax is calculated after federal and state excise taxes have already been added to the base cost of the gasoline. When gas prices rise globally, the amount of sales tax you pay in Illinois increases proportionally, compounding the pain at the pump. This fiscal structure turns high gas prices into a windfall for the state's general fund while punishing consumers twice. In states like Iowa or Wisconsin, a spike in crude oil prices affects only the product's base price; in Illinois, it triggers a higher tax per gallon. This explains why, during periods of market volatility, the price gap between Illinois and its neighbors often widens significantly. Related: These 9 states have the cheapest gas in the United States County and city surchargesIf you’re filling up in Cook County or within Chicago city limits, the state-level taxes are only the beginning of the story. Cook County adds its own 1.75% surcharge, and the City of Chicago tacks on an additional per-gallon charge. By the time you’ve paid the federal government, the state of Illinois, the county, and the city, up to 90 cents of every gallon’s price is composed of taxes and fees rather than the actual fuel. These local add-ons are meant to fund public transit and local infrastructure, but also create massive regional price swings within the state. Drivers in the Chicago suburbs often see prices up to 60 cents higher than in rural downstate counties. Getty Stringent environmental fuel standardsNorthern Illinois, specifically the Chicago and Metro East areas, is subject to federal and state clean air mandates that require the use of reformulated gasoline (RFG). This specific “summer” blend is designed to burn cleaner and reduce smog-forming emissions in warmer months. However, producing RFG is more expensive than the "conventional" gasoline used in the vast majority of Missouri, Iowa, and Indiana, adding an estimated 15 to 20 cents per gallon to the cost. (Californians know this pain all too well.) Because RFG is a niche product produced by a limited number of refineries, any supply disruption feels like a localized catastrophe. When a refinery in the Midwest goes offline for maintenance, standard gas used in neighboring states can be easily diverted from other regions. Illinois drivers, however, are often stuck waiting for RFG to arrive, leading to localized price spikes that their neighbors simply don't experience. Brandon Bell/Getty Images Supply chain and refinery issues hurt, tooWhile Illinois is home to several major refineries, including facilities in Joliet and Wood River, the state’s fuel infrastructure is highly specialized. Much of the state’s supply depends on the BP Whiting refinery just across the border in Indiana, the largest in the Midwest. When Whiting or other local facilities experience "unplanned maintenance" or operational hiccups, the supply of Illinois-compliant fuel drops sharply, and prices skyrocket almost instantly. While Missouri can pull from a wider array of Gulf Coast supplies, Illinois is often a captive market for local refiners. This lack of flexibility in the supply chain, combined with high demand in the Chicago metro area, gives retailers little incentive to lower prices, as they know consumers have few other options for compliant fuel. China's BYD Wants to Challenge Toyota GR, Nissan Nismo, and Hyundai N
Halo Products Promote AspirationsPerformance divisions aren’t about moving huge volumes. They exist to give brands a bit of an edge – something that signals they know what makes driving fun, even if most buyers never go near the flagship models. Toyota has Gazoo Racing, Nissanhas Nismo, and Hyundai’s N division has built a real following. These sub-brands add credibility to the lineup, showing that the company cares about more than just getting from A to B. Chinese brands have mostly skipped the performance game, focusing instead on tech, value, and electrification. But that’s starting to change. BYD, now the world’s sixth-largest automaker and recently ahead of Ford in global sales, looks ready to carve out a performance identity of its own. BYD A Global Undertaking from a Local PushIn an interview with Carsales, BYD Australia’s Chief Product Officer, Sajid Hasan, says the local team wants to work with headquarters in China on a real performance strategy. Hasan points out that real performance sub-brands are built from the home market up, with long-term plans and real substance. That rules out quick sticker packs or limited runs. The expectation is for genuine mechanical upgrades and clear differences from standard models. Some models already stand out as likely candidates. There’s also talk about tougher versions of future models, like a more aggressive Shark 6 that could go up against Ford Performance offerings like the Ranger Raptor. Motorsport is also on the table, as a way to link innovation and competition back to the cars people can actually buy. For now, though, it’s still just a strategy discussion, not a confirmed product plan. BYD BYD Isn’t Exactly New to SpeedBYD might seem new to the performance scene, but it’s already shown what it can do at the top end through its Yangwang luxury brand. The Yangwang U9 hypercar has made headlines with claims of nearly 3,000 horsepower and a top speed over 300 mph – yes, faster than a Bugatti – proving the engineering is already there. One even showed up in Miami, drawing attention to Chinese performance EVs, even though BYD doesn’t officially sell passenger cars in the US. Whether BYD’s performance project, should it happen, makes it to America is still up in the air. The brand has to get here first before we see its mettle in the metal. This 9,000-Pound GMC Hummer EV Just Beat Five Supercars From 0–60
GMC recently took to the Texas Motor Speedway to film a rather unusual drag race (embedded at the bottom of this article). The lineup included a Ferrari F8 Tributo, a Ford GT, a Dodge Challenger Hellcat, an Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, and a Porsche Taycan, and as the quartet of high-performance cars left the line in a race from 0-60 mph, our vantage point is that of the camera car. Which would win? Well, none of the above. The camera car is victorious by a big margin, and as the race comes to an end, we see that it's a 2026 GMC Hummer EV Carbon Fiber Edition, which is new for 2026. Even more embarassing for the other marques is that, along with the heavy camera arm, the monstrous electric pickup is carrying four people. GMC Hummer EV Beats Exotics Even with a Handicap General Motors View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article GM says that the electric truck was able to repeat the feat multiple times in the 90-degree heat without any dropoff in performance, so the race was run again — this time with the Hummer EV starting a car length back. Even so, it was able to beat all four of the other cars with ease. That's thanks to 1,160 horsepower in 2026 3X (tri-motor) trims with the available 24-module battery, which GMC claims can translate to a 0-60 mph time as low as 2.8 seconds. "We changed the calibration based on a better understanding of what the battery and the motors are capable of," said GMC Hummer EV lead engineer KC Connolly. "That's what enabled us to drop the 0-60 mph time below three seconds." Related: What Makes the 2026 GMC Hummer EV 3X Pickup Ridiculous is Actually What Makes it Genius It goes without saying that if the race were run over a longer distance, where off-the-line traction is less of an issue and the combustion-powered cars could let their engines show their true potential, the Hummer would get smacked, and if the race involved some corners, the other cars' lower center gravity and smaller mass would pay off. But as the end of the video shows, the Hummer can do other thing that these low-slung cars can't, like go off-road. While the Hummer may be a symbol of excess (some variants weigh up to 9,640 lbs), so are its rivals in this race, and besides the Taycan, none of them can fit more than two adults in comfort. GMC Hummer EV Carbon Fiber Edition Upgrades General Motors Available for both pickup and SUV variants of the Hummer EV 3X trim, GMC's new Carbon Fiber special edition equips the vehicle with Magnus Gray Matte paint on the outside and a Velocity Ember theme inside. 22-inch carbon fiber wheels are joined by a carbon fiber skid plate insert and a gloss black approach shield. What does this cost? Well, we don't know. GMC's website says to ask your dealer for pricing, but what we can say is that a normal 3X starts at $107,995 for either pickup or SUV, excluding a $2,495 destination charge for 2026. Over 2 Million Dodge and Chrysler Cars Accused of Faulty Seat Design in New Lawsuit
From One Courtroom to AnotherFresh off a win in court over Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat resale values, FCA US – the American side of Stellantis – is back in the legal hot seat. This time, it’s not about money or market trends. The focus is on a hardware issue that could impact driver and passenger safety. A new class-action lawsuit says FCA and seat supplier Lear Corporation sold over 2 million vehicles with a faulty electric seat-height adjuster. According to the complaint, this part, found in several Dodge and Chrysler models, can collapse in certain rear-end crashes. If that happens, the seat could suddenly drop, shifting the occupant out of position with the car’s safety systems. The lawsuit calls this a design and testing failure, and says FCA and Lear didn’t warn buyers about the problem. The case is now in federal court in Texas. What the Lawsuit SaysThe heart of the lawsuit is a small part called the seat height adjuster bracket. This piece connects to the seat frame and raises or lowers the seat when you hit the switch. The complaint says the bracket – about the size of a stick of gum – can fail in a rear-end crash. Here’s how it works: an electric motor spins a screw, moving a nut and bracket to raise or lower the seat. In crash tests run by the plaintiffs’ lawyers, the bracket reportedly broke during a 25-mph rear impact. That caused the seat to drop, potentially leaving occupants out of position for seat belts and airbags. Vehicles listed in the complaint include: 2011–2023 Dodge Charger2011–2023 Chrysler 3002011–2023 Dodge Challenger2011–2017 Chrysler 2002013–2016 Dodge DartThe lawsuit also accuses FCA and Lear of concealing the issue and failing to alert regulators and customers, and it adds additional claims under consumer protection laws and racketeering statutes. Plaintiffs are seeking class-action status covering current and former owners or lessees across the US. Dodge What Happens NextLike most defect lawsuits, these are just early claims, not proven facts. FCA hasn’t responded in court yet, and it’ll probably be months before we know if the case will go to trial or get class-action status. The outcome will likely depend on crash-test data, engineering decisions, and whether the adjuster poses a significant safety risk to most drivers. Automakers usually argue that lab tests don’t match real-world crashes, or that failures only happen in rare situations. Expect that debate to be front and center as the case moves forward. Whether this leads to a recall or remains in court will depend on the evidence and regulators' response. For now, owners of these models should monitor developments. Stellantis Sued After Jeep 4xe Owners Told Not to Charge Their SUVs
Near the end of 2025, Stellantis pulled the plug on 4xe plug-in hybrid versions of both the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The automaker had issued recalls for the PHEVs in 2023 and 2024, plus another in November last year, but a remedy for potential battery fires had not been developed, so dealers were instructed to stop selling the SUVs, and both were pulled from Jeep's website. For those who had already taken delivery of a 4xe Jeep, however, these efforts have not been appreciated, as noted in a new class action lawsuit, reports CarComplaints.com. These plaintiffs are not suing because their vehicles have caught fire, but because their vehicles have been kneecapped for too long. Jeep Lawsuit Over Battery Fire Recall: Owners Disgruntled Getty The plaintiffs say that the recall letters received from Chrysler tell them to neither to charge their batteries nor park near anything that may catch fire until the issue is resolved, causing inconvenience and leaving them without a key feature of their vehicles, one which would have been a strong motivator behind the purchase. With multiple recalls, owners have been forced to take their vehicles in for repairs more than once, and these repairs have not been effective, thus leaving owners vulnerable to lithium-ion battery fires. Separately, one Wrangler PHEV owner documented the repair process, which involved a software update that typically takes a couple of hours, followed by a short test drive, but this wasn't enough to resolve the issue, and his Wrangler 4xe required a new battery. The lawsuit claims that the automaker initially avoided recalling 2024 Jeep hybrids to save money, despite knowing the batteries may be dangerous. For the record, the Samsung-supplied batteries may have defects caused by separator damage, which could cause the SUVs to catch fire even when the powertrain is off. Hundreds of Thousands of Jeep Hybrids Have Been Recalled Stellantis View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The 2024 recall relating to this problem affected over 150,000 vehicles, but the most recent recall names over 320,000 vehicles, which the plaintiffs say means every Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicle ever built besides 2026 models. Specifically, it names the 2020-2025 Wrangler 4xe and the 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe. The class action lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, was initiated by Lisa and Jason Humphreys, who own a 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. It's also worth noting that some 92,000 Grand Cherokee PHEVs were recalled last year for a sudden loss of power. Hopefully, Jeep's new Grand Wagoneer 4xe won't suffer similar issues. Let the Chase begin: NASCAR Cup points after Daytona
It's far too early to start making championship predictions, but every point matters in this return to a more traditional NASCAR championship format. One year ago, we would have been saying 'Welcome to the Playoffs Tyler Reddick' because due to win and you're in, the greater points picture wouldn't have mattered that much. But it matters now! Mazda Replaces Its Signature Knob With a Touchscreen — and Says It’s Safer
Mazda's Touchscreen EraDespite many automakers adopting large touchscreens, Mazda initially stuck with its rotary commander knob – a decision that, compared to newer interiors, made its cabins feel dated. The company has since replaced the knob with a larger touchscreen in the new-gen, 2026 CX-5, while insisting its core design philosophy remains unchanged. In a report by Motor1, Matthew Valbuena, Mazda’s project manager for in-vehicle technologies and human-machine interfaces, said minimizing driver distraction remains the priority. While placing HVAC controls within a large touchscreen may seem counterintuitive, Valbuena argues that Mazda designed the system with multiple safeguards to stay aligned with that philosophy. Mazda A Safety-First ApproachFor starters, several touchscreen functions can be operated via controls mounted on the steering wheel. Features such as the media source selector are also mirrored in the instrument cluster, reducing the need to glance at the center display. Mazda also emphasized its voice-recognition system, which allows drivers to adjust certain settings without taking their eyes off the road. Valbuena also noted that modern technologies such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay require a touchscreen-first infotainment system to deliver a better user experience. He compared Mazda’s two infotainment setups to the iPod Classic and the iPod Touch, saying, “Both can do the same things, but the iPod Touch offers greater flexibility and can do more than the iPod Classic.” Mazda The Brand’s Proven PerformerThis new approach was strategically introduced in the Mazda CX-5, which remains the brand’s best-selling model in the modern era. The CX-5 recently became the company’s third vehicle to surpass five million units in production, following the 323 and the Mazda3. In the U.S., the model competes with heavyweights such as the Toyota RAV4, one of the country’s best-selling vehicles alongside the Ford F-Series. With the CX-5 still imported from Japan, Mazda faces tariff pressures in the U.S. market and has acknowledged making cost-saving adjustments to the latest-generation model, changes the company says customers are unlikely to notice. Whether the new CX-5 can sustain that momentum remains to be seen, but it’s encouraging to see the brand responding to customer feedback while adapting to modern expectations without abandoning its core philosophy. The 2026 CX-5 starts at $29,990, excluding destination fees, and comes standard with a 12.9-inch touchscreen. The larger 15.6-inch display is available in the range-topping Premium Plus trim, which starts at $38,990. Mazda View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Inside a Failed Jeep 4.0: A Reminder That Even “Bulletproof” Engines Need Care
Built Like a BrickThe Jeep 4.0-liter inline-six, also known as the AMC 242, may not have been the most powerful engine of its era – especially compared to Toyota’s 4.0-liter V6, which produced around 245 horsepower – but it made up for that with a reputation for durability. However, like most engines, the Jeep 4.0 can develop serious issues if neglected, as shown in this particular example that Eric from I Do Cars tore down. Based on the part numbers for the upper radiator hose and distributor, this engine was believed to have been sourced from a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was rated at approximately 185 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. It was also offered with a more potent V8 engine. The engine specialist didn’t have any background on it – no mileage, no service history, and no clear explanation of how it failed. However, early signs, such as visible holes in the oil pan, already suggest the damage was catastrophic. Inside the DamageAfter removing the valve cover, the valvetrain components initially appeared to be in fair condition. However, the oil was contaminated with metal shavings and traces of coolant fluids that should never mix, indicating severe internal failure. Further inspection of the block revealed heavy carbon buildup on top of the cylinders, and one piston crown showed visible cracking. Unsurprisingly, the oil pan contained significant engine debris, including pieces of a connecting rod and a wrist pin, a part usually not found in the oil pan. There were also impact marks on the crankshaft, while most of the bearings were in bad condition. I Do Cars/YouTube Tough, But Not UntouchableThis Jeep 4.0 showed clear signs of having run with low oil. Without adequate lubrication, internal components make metal-to-metal contact, accelerating wear and raising operating temperatures. As heat builds, the risk of catastrophic failure increases – often resulting in a “grenaded” engine, where internal parts break apart and punch through the block or oil pan. Eric also noted that the engine appeared to have been rebuilt at some point based on the parts used, suggesting it had already experienced serious issues prior to this failure. The takeaway is that the classic Grand Cherokee powerplant didn’t fail due to a design flaw. It used a simple pushrod layout with a cast-iron block and cylinder head – an inherently durable setup capable of lasting around 300,000 miles with proper maintenance. Ford Mustang GT3 Wrecked at 155 MPH After Sudden Kangaroo Strike
Australia’s Mount Panorama Circuit is already one of the toughest, most demanding racetracks in the world, packed with blind corners, huge elevation changes and unforgiving concrete walls. As is so often the case in Australia, though, the wildlife presents an extra layer of danger. In this case, though, it’s not venomous snakes or spiders the drivers need to worry about, but bouncy marsupials. It’s not an unusual sight for a kangaroo to find its way onto the circuit, which sits in the town of Bathurst, New South Wales, a few hours west of Sydney, and usually, race officials are able to spot the encroaching animal and throw a caution before things have the potential to go horribly wrong. That wasn’t the case in this year’s Bathurst 12 Hours, though. Just 20 minutes into the event, with the track still in pitch darkness following the 5:30am green flag, the race of the No. 64 Ford Mustang GT3 – a model making its debut at the endurance classic – came to a gruesome end. Related: Chevrolet Sends 670-HP Corvette Z06 to Australia With Ultra-Rare 12-Car Run One Animal was Harmed https://www.youtube.com/live/MMjh7u-fCXQ?si=djWdaOZvHxJU5ccl&t=2369 Initial scenes from the race broadcast showed the Mustang stopped by the side of the circuit with driver Chris Mies standing on the other side of the concrete barrier, his face and race suit covered in some sort of dark fluid. The commentators speculated that the car had suffered some sort of high-pressure failure that had caused oil to enter the cockpit. However, it quickly became clear that the truth was a lot gorier. In a pit garage interview, Mies’ co-driver Dennis Olsen confirmed that the incident was in fact the result of an animal strike on the fastest part of the circuit, the Conrod Straight. The car was travelling at an estimated 250 KPH – around 155 MPH – when it hit the unfortunate roo. Replay footage showed that the yellow flag had been thrown, but it all happened too quickly for Mies to react. Later imagery of the car being recovered showed a missing hood and a caved-in windshield – not exactly surprising given the impact speed and the fact that a fully grown kangaroo can weigh up to 200lbs. A Grisly ExperienceConfirmation that the Mustang hit a kangaroo on Conrod Straight. Mies appears shaken - as you would be - but ok. LIVE 📺 https://t.co/CCFKvGZiq6#IGTC | #B12Hr 🦘 pic.twitter.com/Ewgk3gzOjc — Intercontinental GT Challenge (@IntercontGTC) February 14, 2026 Following the incident, Mies, who was shaken but thankfully unharmed, spoke to Australian outlet Speedcafe, and painted a pretty unpleasant picture. “We were all in line and basically within a thousandth of a second, a millisecond, the kangaroo showed up on the left, obviously at a very high speed,” he said. “If I can just imagine the whole kangaroo would have come inside. I mean, half of it was inside, so I’m glad I’m standing here now.” Mies went on to say that his eyes were full of kangaroo blood following the impact, and that the sheer smell caused him to vomit: “I can tell you the inside of a kangaroo doesn’t smell very nice.” A Chaotic RaceMies’ unfortunate run-in with the local wildlife wasn’t the only major incident during the 12-hour enduro. With just over a quarter of the race left to run, a Porsche 911 and Aston Martin Vantage found themselves stranded on a blind part of the circuit. The leading pack, with the Craft-Bamboo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 being driven by Ralf Aron heading up the field, was fast approaching the stricken cars, and a combination of an unfortunately-placed marshal post and communication issues that the car had been experiencing meant Aron didn't see the crash until the last moment. This led to him hitting the stationary Porsche at full race speed, a brutal impact that left him with two fractures in his back. The incident-strewn race was eventually won by a fellow AMG GT3, the Team GMR car of Maro Engel, Mikael Grenier and Maxime Martin. View the full article

After 70 Years of Marriage, This Couple in Their 90s Finally Bought a Porsche
Dreaming BigWe all have our own dreams and aspirations; these drive us forward day to day. Petrolheads can narrow their preferences, single-mindedly pursuing the brands and models they want. Porschetoday is considered a mass-market automotive juggernaut, yet it remains an aspirational brand for most. Each model that comes out of their factory comes with the certainty of the 'Porsche Magic' we have all come to know and revere. Some spend their lives saving for it, and some actually achieve it – like this elderly couple who just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. A Porsche Dream Come TrueEverybody loves a feel-good story, especially one that involves cars. Making the news cycle is an elderly couple from Great Britain who just celebrated seventy years together. Instead of the usual way to mark the occasion with flowers or a romantic date, they chose to go big and purchase their first-ever Porsche. Derek and Audrey Evans are both well into their 90s, yet their adventurous streak lives on, which is why they chose a Porsche Macan. Derek was quick to point out that while they aren't (or never were) "boy racers," he and his dear wife enjoy the feeling of power and comfort. Adding to the reason behind their Porsche purchase, Derek says, “I’ve always thought Porsche was unique – so reliable, and unlike anything else." He went on to say that they've always wanted one as a couple and thought, "Why not buy one now?" Their desire was also underscored by their belief that owning a Porsche is like being part of an 'amazing' club. Pushing them into the purchase was also the fact that they recently borrowed a 911 from the local dealer. As the couple enjoys the Macan, they already have an eye on the future, agreeing that the next Porsche they want is the Taycan. Intertwined by HistoryAn interesting fact about the Evanses is that the couple started their lives together in the 1950s, owning an Austin 7 as their first car. This coincides with Porsche Cars Great Britain setting up shop in the UK not long ago and, in fact, also celebrating a milestone like the Evanses: 75 years in the UK. The Evanses' purchase of their first Porsche is proof that dreams, no matter how big, are achievable, no matter what. All it takes is the willpower and determination to make them come true. Here's to more years for the Evans couple. We should all be so lucky to be like them someday. View the full article

Honda’s New Electric Hot Hatch Is Another Car Americans Can’t Have
Tiny EV Hot HatchHonda looks set to add another name to the list of cars Americans can only admire from a distance. The new Super-One is a compact, kei-inspired electric hatchback built to make daily driving more fun, mixing retro cues with current EV tech. Honda first showed the Super-One as a prototype at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, describing it as a small EV with a focus on making everyday drives more engaging. Production was originally set for 2026, but with launch prep already underway in Japan and other markets, it looks like the car will arrive ahead of schedule. Honda The Honda City Turbo II RebootAlmost unchanged from its prototype form, the Super-One uses Honda’s N-Series platform but goes beyond the usual kei-car formula. It sits wider, with bigger tires and a more planted look, pushing it closer to a mini hot hatch than a standard city EV. The styling calls back to the City Turbo II, with clear hints of Honda’s 1980s performance DNA. According to Honda’s designers, the Super-One’s performance features were built straight into the bodywork. The EV hot hatch uses real ducts at the front and rear to cut drag and manage airflow. Relief vents at the back help reduce turbulence, improving cooling and stability instead of just adding visual flair. There’s also a model-exclusive paint color called Boost Violet Pearl, which is inspired by the "Blue Jet" lightning. Inside, the Super-One aims to keep drivers engaged. Sports seats, a 7-inch digital cluster, active sound control, and a new BOOST mode work together to deliver some of the feel of classic performance driving on an electric platform. Honda Not Your Typical Honda Kei CarHonda hasn’t released full specs yet, but early info points to the Super-One breaking past typical kei car limits in both size and power. Output is rumored to be around 95 horsepower, well above the 63-hp cap for kei cars in Japan. BOOST mode bumps up performance for short bursts, syncing simulated engine sounds and a virtual multi-speed transmission to give drivers a more familiar, performance-focused feel even with an electric setup. As for pricing, reports from Japan put the Super-One at about ¥5 million, or $32,000. That’s higher than most would expect for a car this size, but once it steps outside kei car rules, extra taxes and hardware drive the price up. That price likely puts the Super-One in niche territory, aimed more at enthusiasts than the average city car buyer. In Japan or Europe, it could still find a following as a fun, urban performance car. For American fans, it’s shaping up to be another small Honda that looks right for US streets but remains out of reach. Subaru Says STI Isn’t Dead — And “Exciting” Models Are in the Works
STI in the ShadowsLooking at Subaru’s current portfolio, it’s understandable why some believe the brand’s performance division, STI, is effectively dead. At the moment, Subaru appears more focused on electrification – having unveiled two new EVs, the Uncharted and Trailseeker – rather than pushing back against tightening emissions regulations with the kind of turbocharged, enthusiast-focused STI models that once defined the brand’s performance image. However, a report from Australia’s CarSales suggests that the assumption may be premature. Subaru Australia General Manager Scott Lawrence told the publication during the launch of the new-generation Outback that STI still has several projects in the pipeline, which he described as “exciting.” Subaru The Broader Game PlanLawrence noted that Subaru isn’t solely focused on reviving the STI badge, but on developing a broader performance portfolio. Whether fans like it or not, the Japanese marque is expected to include all-electric vehicles in that strategy. Well, the Trailseeker is currently the brand’s quickest production model, packing a 375-horsepower dual-motor setup capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. The Subaru Australia chief did not disclose specific details about the brand’s future performance models. However, he offered reassuring comments that may give fans hope as they have long waited for a proper STI revival. “But just know, STI is not dead — there’s really exciting work going on in the background,” he said. Subaru Teasing the FaithfulSo far, Subaru has limited STI’s return to a series of concepts. These include the Performance-E STI Concept, an all-electric vision of STI, and the Performance-B STI Concept, which retains a horizontally opposed boxer engine and the brand's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. More recently, the automaker unveiled the WRX STI Sport♯ prototype, featuring pronounced STI performance upgrades and a manual gearbox – though it appears aimed more at sustaining enthusiast interest than signaling a full-scale STI revival. While Subaru’s “exciting” long-term plans for STI remain under wraps, the automaker has been expanding its electrified lineup in the U.S. The brand is capitalizing on renewed demand for hybrids while recalibrating its all-electric strategy following the recent slowdown in the EV market. Subaru recently began building its first hybrid at its Indiana plant, the Forester Hybrid, positioning it against segment leaders like the Toyota RAV4, which is hybrid-only starting with the 2026 model year. Over 500,000 Hyundai Palisade SUVs Hit With Airbag Lawsuit After Recall
Hot-Selling SUV Under Fresh ScrutinyWith 123,929 units sold last year, the Hyundai Palisade is a key model in the automaker’s US lineup, alongside the Tucson, Santa Fe, and Elantra. But with so many on the road, every recall or safety issue gets noticed by many owners. Last month, Hyundai recalled 2020 to 2025 Palisade SUVs after regulators found that the third-row side curtain airbags might not meet federal safety standards. The main concern is whether these airbags actually protect passengers from being ejected in a crash. Soon after the recall, a class-action lawsuit was filed, claiming Hyundai didn’t do enough to address the problem. The lawsuit, filed on February 5, 2026, alleges that Hyundai continued to sell and lease Palisades with the airbag issue, without fully fixing it or warning buyers of the risks. For a vehicle marketed on safety and family use, that gap is fueling frustration among owners. Hyundai What the Lawsuit AllegesAccording to the lawsuit, over 500,000 Palisades built from April 2019 to June 2025 have a defect in their third-row side curtain airbags. The claim is that these airbags don’t meet federal standards meant to keep passengers from being ejected in a side impact. The suit says Hyundai first found out about the problem after federal tests in April 2025 showed the airbags didn’t pass key safety checks. More tests and internal reviews confirmed the issue, which led to the recall in January 2026. The main dispute centers on Hyundai’s response after the recall. The complaint says the company has not offered an effective repair or fully informed owners and buyers about the scope and impact of the defect. It also alleges that Palisades were still marketed and sold without a clear long-term solution. The case is aiming for class-action status for Palisade buyers and lessees nationwide. The argument is that people either paid too much or might have chosen a different SUV if they’d known about the airbag problem. Meanwhile, Hyundai kept making money while owners waited for answers. Of course, these are just the plaintiffs’ claims for now, and the courts still have to sort out what actually happened. Hyundai Not the First Lawsuit Over the PalisadeThis isn’t the first time the Palisade has met legal heat. Earlier lawsuits have focused on other issues, such as brake problems and engine failures. None of this means the Palisade is unsafe across the board, though, but it does show how quickly legal pressure can build when a popular model runs into repeated technical problems. For Hyundai, the real test is fixing the issue and managing how buyers see the brand after so many recalls and lawsuits. With the Palisade being such a key part of Hyundai’s US lineup and the rest of the world, how the company handles this latest lawsuit could be just as important as what the courts decide in the end.
