The 2026 Lexus ES Is Priced Under $50K — But Only If You Buy Electric
Lexus introduced the all-new ES sedan last year in both hybrid and EV flavors, but we’ve had to wait until now to find out how much it costs. While more expensive than the outgoing ES, the new one still starts at under $50,000. This keeps the midsize sedan’s strong value proposition alive, as the ES has typically undercut smaller compact luxury sedans from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Another surprise is that the new ES is cheapest with the fully electric powertrain, so let’s take a more detailed look at pricing. 2026 Lexus ES Pricing Lexus Lexus quietly shared the cost of the new ES in a pricing sheet on its press site. The cheapest model is the ES 350e Premium, which starts at $48,795, a price that includes a destination fee of $1,295. The cheapest hybrid is the ES 350h Premium, which goes for $50,995. Very few EVs are cheaper than their hybrid equivalents, but the ES is an outlier in this regard. For reference, the outgoing ES Hybrid started at $44,835. Here’s a look at all prices for the 2026 ES: ES 350e Premium: $48,795ES 350h Premium: $50,995ES 500e Premium: $51,795ES 350h Premium AWD: $52,395ES 350h Premium+: $55,795ES 350h Premium+ AWD: $57,195ES 350e Luxury: $57,195ES 500e Luxury: $60,195To put those prices into perspective, BMW’s electric i5 will cost at least $67,100 and the base Mercedes-Benz EQE costs $64,950. The most affordable 5 Series hybrid is way up at $75,500. Even Genesis charges at least $58,450 for the non-hybrid G80, so the new Lexus ES comfortably undercuts all of them. Lexus The ES’ price is closer to many compact sedans, and not all of them are luxury models. The mid-range Hyundai Ioniq 6 SEL costs $45,600, only just short of the $47,500 base ES 350e (excluding the destination charge for both). Related: Let's See How the 2026 Lexus ES Compares to Audi's A6 & BMW's 5-Series Lexus ES Hybrid Vs ES EV: What’s The Better Buy? Lexus Just over $2,000 separates the base hybrid and EV versions of the new ES. The hybrid has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motors to produce 243 horsepower combined, above the base EV’s 220 hp. Performance for these cheaper models is similar; the front-wheel-drive hybrid needs 7.4 seconds to hit 60, while the FWD EV takes 7.7. The FWD EV has a 300-mile range. Although we don’t know the mpg ratings or gas tank size of the hybrid, it should easily have a much longer range. Both base models are Premium trims, so the standard and optional features should mirror each other. If this will be your only car, the hybrid may be the better choice due to its expected longer range. But if this will be your second car and there’s another gas-powered model in the household, the cheaper EV’s greater refinement and similar performance are appealing. Higher up in the lineup, the $51,795 ES 500e Premium may just be the pick of the bunch. With 338 hp and AWD, it needs only 5.4 seconds to reach 60, easily quicker than even the AWD Hybrid. The only downside? It has a range of just 250 miles. Related: The Last Lexus ES Made in America Rolls Off the Production Line Final ThoughtsFor years, buyers have been waiting for price parity between gas and/or hybrid models and EVs. The new Lexus ES finally achieves that. In fact, we expect many consumers will have a tough time deciding between the hybrid and EV versions, so closely are they matched in price and performance. As with the BMW 5 Series and electric i5, the ES also looks the same regardless of the powertrain you choose. If you can live with the limited range of the EVs and have the ability to charge at home, these models stand out. If not, the hybrids are likely to be similar to drive and will be better for buyers afraid of range anxiety. View the full article

All-New Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Reveals Its Cabin As It Goes Electric
Since late last year, Mercedes-AMG has been teasing its latest take on the luxury high-performance four-door "coupe," the AMG GT 4-Door, and while we already have a good idea of what to expect from the exterior thanks to the Concept AMG GT XX and various spy shots, the cabin of the concept was clearly too extreme to ever make production without being toned down heavily. Affaltberbach has now revealed the interior of its first n-house EV, and it's a clear bridge between present and future AMG. It's also attention-grabbing in a way that the interior of a Porsche Taycan, arguably its chief rival, is not, with plenty of contrasting colors and elements. However, it's not necessarily perfect. 2027 AMG GT 4-Door Is Big on Screens Mercedes-AMG View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article As an EV and a new product, it's no surprise to see that the cabin is festooned with screens, though AMG has used metal in several places to try imbue the interior with an analog feel. The one that immediately grabs attention is the curved display atop the dash, made up of a 10.2-inch driver cluster and a 14-inch MBUX infotainment screen with new AI-powered MB.OS software. We've seen this sort of slab-like screen setup in various older BMW products (the latest iX3 does away with a one-piece dual display) and in the new Audi RS 5, so it's nothing new. As in the Concept AMG GT XX, the main display is angled toward the driver to create a sportier ambiance, and like the abovementioned Audi, a separate display is available for the passenger, measuring 14 inches. Different themes, including AMG Special, AMG Track Pace with telemetry data and acceleration info, and Classic, alter the mood. On either end of the dashboard, round galvanized air vents bridge the gap to previous AMG products, while the center vents sit atop the console and ahead of a pair of wireless charging pads. Presumably, these outlets will also help keep devices cool and also allow one to rest their hand when operating the climate control functions on the screen. Physical controls would have been better, of course. Mercedes-AMG Behind these pads are two illuminated cupholders, which tie in with the dash vents, and further back, the armrest hides a storage area. To the left of the cupholders, we finally find a physical means of interacting with the car's brain, with three knobs in a similar red-and-silver knurled finish to the vents. These handle Response Control, changing how the electric motors react to accelerator pedal inputs so that one can have typically electric acceleration or more relaxed motivation, Agility Control, which handles cornering behavior, and Traction Control, with nine stages. Finally, the flat-bottom steering wheel (available in leather, carbon fiber, or microfiber) also offers some analog interactions with rockers and rollers, as well as the usual pair of round AMG Drive Unit buttons (with another screen each) for adjusting drive programs and other functions. Behind the wheel, paddles adjust the level of energy recuperation under deceleration. 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT Offers Unique Interior Ambiance Mercedes-AMG From the comfort-oriented standard front seats or the optional AMG Performance seats pictured here, plenty of ambient lighting bathes the cabin in a warm glow of color, which can be modified; you don't need to stick with red and black, and that applies to the seats themselves, too, which will be available in various colors, including a number of Manufaktur Exclusive options. The same goes for the seatbelts. The rear perches are also available in two configurations, with two individual seats as standard or a three-seat bench as an option. Either way, the rear backrests fold, and behind the front seats, recesses in the floor offer more legroom. Cargo capacity hasn't been announced yet, so it's probably not immense. Batteries take up space, after all. Mercedes-AMG Yet another screen appears behind the center console, allowing those in the back to control their own climate settings, but the highlight of the interior space is the one-piece panoramic glass roof, which extends all the way to the rear windshield and can switch between transparent and opaque settings. Optionally, Sky Control will divide the panel into individually switchable segments to control how much light enters the cabin, and customers can also opt to have lighting in here, with illuminated AMG emblems and striping that will match the selected ambient lighting color. Mercedes-AMG View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Finally, we have to talk about the door cards, which feature floating armrests. The contrast stitching design evokes old racecars, and the chair-shaped seat controls are a clean refresh on a Mercedes classic, while the mix of leather, carbon fiber and, with the Burmester 3D Surround Sound System, stainless steel, but it may take a little while to grow accustomed to the hidden door pulls, and many occupants will likely reach for the seat controls the first few times they try to emerge from the car. This brings us to a problem: ergonomics. Autoblog's Take Mercedes-AMG View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article While we admire how Mercedes has tried something different by putting the powertrain controls on the driver's side of the center console as a means of making the electric underpinnings more engaging, and we concede that the doors will become second nature, the fact that, besides a few controls behind the wireless charging pads for things like emergency hazards, suspension, and volume control, this is yet another heavily digital interior experience, and it's going to require something special in the powertrain and cosmetics departments for AMG's first in-house EV to stand out in a sea of high-performance, screen-rich electric offerings. Ferrari knows this and has chosen to rely heavily on physical controls for its first EV, the Luce. With a trio of lightweight axial-flux motors expected and a direct-cooled battery for repeatable performance, AMG's 800-volt system will doubtless offer incredible figures, likely around 1,341 horsepower, but will customers care? A reveal date and an on-sale period are yet to be announced, but we'll surely find out soon enough. Mercedes-Benz View the full article

Toyota Recalls 550,000 Highlander SUVs For Rear Seat Safety Defect
Even the automaker with the most prized reputation for dependability isn’t immune to recalls. Toyota has announced a voluntary recall of 550,000 Highlanders, its popular three-row crossover, for an issue with its second-row seats; all are U.S. models. This isn’t the first time Toyota has had to recall one of its larger vehicles for second-row seating issues, as 55,000 examples of the Sienna minivan were recalled for such an issue last year. Far more Highlander SUVs are affected, though, so let’s dig into everything owners need to know. Related: 2025 Toyota Sienna Recall Is Bad News For Those In The Back Seat What Highlander Models Are Affected? Toyota The new Toyota Highlander recall affects both gas and hybrid derivatives between the 2021 and 2024 model years. Toyota sold 169,543 Highlanders in 2023 alone, so there are many thousands of these vehicles on the road. According to Toyota’s statement, the recliner assemblies in the second-row seats of some models may not fully lock after the seat back is adjusted. If the seat back isn’t in a secure, locked position, it may not restrain occupants properly in the event of a crash. This increases the risk of an injury, especially in a high-speed crash. The remedy for the seat is being prepared currently. Affected Highlander owners will need to take their vehicles to a Toyota dealer to replace the return springs in the recliner assemblies with new ones; this will be done at no cost. Owners of vehicles involved in this recall will receive notification letters by early May 2026, so repairs are expected to get underway shortly thereafter. What Owners Can Do Now Toyota Toyota did not mention any known injuries in the recall statement and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has yet to publish information pertaining to this recall. However, it may be wise for owners of the vehicle to seat occupants in the third row, if possible, as the rearmost seats are not affected by the same problem. Owners can also use their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to check if their Highlander is involved in the recall via Toyota.com/recall. The Toyota Brand Engagement Center can also be contacted on 1-800-331-4331 to answer further questions. The gas-powered Highlander has been one of the best-selling three-row crossovers in the U.S. for many years, but it won’t be around for much longer. The newer and cheaper Grand Highlander comprehensively outsold it last year in the U.S. (136,801 to 56,208 units), and Toyota recently revealed an all-new Highlander with a fully electric powertrain. Once the 2027 Highlander EV goes on sale, the current gas/hybrid Highlander is expected to be discontinued. Related: Did Toyota Just Make the Highlander Irrelevant? View the full article

The Last 100 Kia Souls are Being Snapped Up
Hip to be SquareWhen Kia launched the Soul in 2008, it was amid a craze in which automakers were selling boxy subcompact cars left and right. It took a while for it to land in America, but when it arrived stateside for the 2010 model year, it was a smash hit. Perhaps it was the hamsters, but the Soul struck a chord with American buyers. Through the years, the competitors that spurned Kia to build the Soul in the first place have dropped out of the race. There was the Scion xB, axed in 2015, along with the Nissan Cube, discontinued in America in 2014 and eventually retired in Japan in 2019. The Soul soldiered on, but Kia announced that it would be no more after 2025. 17 years, over 1.5 million sold, and a legion of loyal fans have since been established. Kia The Last SoulsAccording to Automotive News, there are just 100 Souls left on dealer lots nationwide. Unsurprisingly, these are being snapped up quickly, and by the time you read this, they're probably all gone by now. For fans, it's a good time to scour showrooms to ask whether any are in stock. Several passionate Soul owners spoke to Automotive News, including one who bought some of the few remaining cars still available. Owners lauded the car for its ease of driving, efficiency, and design as key factors in their purchase. At the same time, some mentioned that the car was classless and could be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of financial or social standing. Kia Kia Soul Through the YearsThe Soul made its world premiere in South Korea in 2008 and was introduced to the U.Ss market for the 2010 model year. In its first full year of sales in America, Kia shifted 67,110 units, but those numbers jumped to 102,267 in 2011. For the next seven years, Kia consistently sold over 100,000 Souls in the U.S. The second-generation Soul came out in 2013 for the 2014 model year. It would give the nameplate its best sales, peaking at 147,133 units in 2015. Come the third generation in 2019, sales dipped below 100,000, the pandemic hit, and sales hovered in the 50,000 to 60,000 unit mark. Despite that, it's still not something anyone would call a slow seller. Still, Kia won't be making a fourth-generation Soul, and there's no successor in sight. Right now, the smallest crossover the brand makes is the Seltos, which lacks the boxy charm of the Soul. But the legacy of the small, boxy crossover will live on for a long time thanks to the thousands of fans it has built over the years. Tariffs Just Killed the Kia EV6 GT in America
The effects of U.S. tariffs on the auto industry cannot be overstated and include billions of dollars in added costs for automakers and suppliers, forced supply chain restructuring and fragmentation, rising manufacturing costs, and more. Obviously, these costs ultimately get transferred to the consumer, leading to higher new car prices. But there’s another ugly consequence for buyers: some models are getting removed from the U.S. market because the tariffs make them no longer financially viable. Kia Blames "Changing Market Conditions" for the Decision Kia Earlier today, we’ve learned that the facelifted 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6, which is made in South Korea, is no longer coming to the U.S.—although the Ioniq 6 N performance variant is—and now we hear that the 2026 Kia EV6 GT performance EV has been delayed indefinitely. Kia manufactures most EV6 variants at its plant in West Point, Georgia, but the range-topping EV6 GT, whose dual-motor AWD powertrain churns out up to 641 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque in launch mode, is built in South Korea and is therefore subject to 25% tariffs. As a result, while the rest of the 2025/2026 Kia EV6 lineup remains on sale, the EV6 GT does not. "Offering tremendous value and exhilarating performance to customers across Kia’s full range of vehicles is paramount, but due to changing market conditions, the 2026 EV6 GT will be delayed until further notice,” Kia said in a statement provided to Road & Track. The automaker added that the delay “does not impact the availability of other trims in the EV6 lineup” that are produced in the USA. The 2025 EV6 GT was priced at $65,295 before being paused, and importing it from South Korea now with the 25% tariffs in place would likely make it too expensive to be viable in the market. The 2025 EV6 GT Is Gone from Kia's Online Configurator—and Dealer Lots Kia The EV6 GT has already been removed from Kia USA’s online configurator, while the rest of the EV6 lineup remains available. A quick search on the automaker's website reveals that there's not a single new 2025 EV6 GT available on dealer lots, either. Tariffs aside, it’s not like EV6 GT sales were booming either. While Kia doesn’t break down sales by trim, EV6 sales combined dropped 60% in the first two months of this year to just 1,140 units; with the EV6 GT being the most expensive of the bunch, sales were probably the lowest among all trims. Besides the EV6 GT, Kia USA is also delaying the EV4 compact electric sedan and the EV3 compact hatchback; both are built in South Korea. Unless Kia decides to build the EV6 GT in the U.S., it’s uncertain when and if the high-performance EV will return to the market. As R&T points out, most automakers that are delaying EVs because of tariffs have done so indefinitely, likely waiting for a reduction of the import duties. When and if that happens is a discussion for another time. View the full article

All-New 2027 BMW X5 Specs Leak Online
BMW’s Upcoming PlansBMW’s future lineup came into sharper focus last week when the brand’s US online shop accidentally listed several upcoming models ahead of schedule. The leak points to a handful of new vehicles set to arrive for the 2027 model year. One of the big reveals: the next-generation BMW X5. That confirms BMW’s midsize SUV is getting a full redesign soon. A separate leak from a trusted insider on the Bimmer Post forum just added more detail. This post lays out early specs and a rough timeline for the next X5, giving us a clearer idea of what BMW has in store for one of its most important SUVs. SH Proshots/Autoblog Early X5 Specs and TimelineAccording to the leak, the next-gen X5 (codenamed G65) is set to start production in August 2026 and run until July 2035. At launch, expect the X5 40 xDrive for global markets, plus a 40d xDrive diesel for regions outside the US. The new X5 is slightly larger than the current, outgoing G05 model. Leaked specs show it stretches to 196.6 inches long – about 2.3 inches more than before. The wheelbase also gets a 2.4-inch bump, now at 119.5 inches. It sits a little lower at 68.9 inches tall and is just a hair narrower at 78.7 inches wide (without mirrors). Ground clearance goes up to 8.9 inches – about half an inch more than the outgoing model. Cargo space is rated at 23.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats, or 65.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. That’s a slight change from before, but nothing dramatic. Under the hood, the X5 40 xDrive gets an updated B58 3.0-liter turbo inline-six. Output is pegged at 394 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, with a mild-hybrid system adding about 17 hp and 148 lb-ft from its integrated electric motor. More variants are on the way after launch. By December 2026, BMW plans to add the US-market X5 40, plus plug-in hybrids like the 50e xDrive and M60e xDrive, and a fully electric iX5 60 xDrive. Down the line, expect the M60 xDrive performance model and more electric options, including the iX5 50 xDrive and iX5 M70 xDrive. BMW The Bigger Picture for BMW’s Future LineupSpecs and timelines aside, the leak leaves many unanswered questions about the new X5. But this SUV is just one part of BMW’s bigger product push. That earlier accidental leak hinted at a wave of new and updated models – both gas and electric – including an all-wheel-drive M2, the rumored M350, and several electric crossovers built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform. If the leaked timeline holds up, the next-gen X5 could break cover in the coming months. For now, these early details give us a first look at what’s next for one of BMW’s most recognizable SUVs. Scout Has 160,000 Reservations—and 87% Aren’t for the EV
Scout Motors, the U.S.-based EV startup operating as an independent subsidiary of Volkswagen Group, has announced that it has racked up more than 160,000 reservations for its ladder-frame Traveler SUV and Terra pickup. That’s obviously great news considering that the company had reported around 130,000 reservations in late October 2025, which means that it has received 30,000 reservations since—or about 7,500 each month. It’s worth pointing out that this doesn’t necessarily mean that Scout has 160,000 sales in the bag—far from it. Reservations cost only $100 per vehicle and are non-binding and fully refundable, so the people who placed them can pull out at any time. Almost 140,000 Reservations Are for the Gas-Powered Extended-Range Hybrid Scout Motors There’s another number that’s arguably more important, and that’s the mix between fully electric variants and extended-range hybrid (EREV), which is overwhelmingly in favor of the latter. While Scout Motors started out as pure-play EV company in 2022 that intended to offer only battery electric powertrains, it announced a gas-powered range-extender powertrain as well in October 2024 as battery electric vehicle growth stalled in the United States. Since then, the U.S. electric vehicle market has been affected by the loss of federal tax credits, the rollback of stricter fuel economy standards favoring EVs and a drop in demand. Scout Motors’ reservation numbers totally reflect that, as 87% of reservation holders (139,200) have opted for extended-range models so far—up from 80% in October last year. This means that the vast majority of people who place reservations for a new Scout Terra or Traveler today go for the extended-range variant. The current 87/13 split in favor of the EREV is far from the roughly 60/40 split that CEO Scott Keogh had anticipated when the company announced plans to introduce an extended-range variant in October 2024. The Scout Traveler and Terra off-roaders will be assembled at a new plant currently under construction in Blythewood, South Carolina, and the company plans to launch the EREV versions first, which is not surprising seeing as they are in much higher demand. Both the SUV and the truck are expected to start under $60,000, but it’s not clear which of the two available powertrains will cost more. Scout CEO Says First Customer Deliveries Coming in 2028 Scout Scout CEO said at an Automotive Press Association event in Detroit on March 4 that the company will begin building prototype models this year in South Carolina, according to Reuters. The automaker previously said volume production would start in 2027, but Keogh said yesterday he expects the SUV and pickup to be in customer hands by 2028. This appears to confirm recent media reports claiming the rollout has been delayed due to technical challenges. Volkswagen relies on Scout Motors to increase market share in the U.S. market dominated by SUVs and trucks. But the automaker is having problems with its U.S. retail network as dealers have sued the company over Scout Motors’ direct-to-consumer business model, claiming the move breaches the automaker’s contract with its retailers and that Scout is not an EV-exclusive carmaker anymore. Keogh stands by the decision, noting that selling Scout vehicles directly to consumers “made the most sense, without a doubt” as far as the U.S. market is concerned. View the full article

Severe Storm Warning: Tornadoes, 80 MPH Winds, and Giant Hail Threaten Texas and the Midwest
What's Coming ThursdayA severe storm system is moving through the central United States on Thursday, and it's bringing the kind of weather that demands your full attention. AccuWeather is warning of tornadoes on the ground from Texas through the Midwest. Winds may reach speeds of up to 80 mph, capable of knocking down trees, causing widespread power outages, and pushing cars out of their lanes. Dallas, TX, is among the cities in the direct firing line. Hail large enough to dent vehicles is also expected, so if you have access to covered parking, now is the time to use it. Where the Danger Shifts Friday By Friday, the worst of the severe weather would have moved east, focusing on cities such as Oklahoma City, OK; Fayetteville, AR; and Springfield, MO. McAlester, OK, sits in a particularly exposed position. As the system continues to move east, the destructive winds and large hail will continue to develop and pose a threat to the entire region. While the overall level of severity of the weather does not appear to diminish significantly from one day to the next, it does shift slightly to the east. Therefore, residents in the affected area would be well advised to turn on their weather alerts and identify the nearest safe place to go in case a severe weather situation develops by Thursday evening. It goes without saying that driving in these conditions is to be avoided unless absolutely necessary. What Drivers Need to KnowIf you are on the road over the next 48 hours, the stakes are higher than a typical rainstorm. Flash flooding becomes a serious concern as storms repeatedly track over the same ground. Never attempt to drive through standing water, as even shallow floods can sweep a car off the road. Hail can crack windshields and kill visibility instantly. If a tornado warning is issued while you are driving, do not shelter under a bridge or overpass. Get low in a ditch away from your vehicle and cover your head. The safest call, if you can make it, is to simply not drive at all. View the full article

Ford Recalls 605,000 SUVs Nearly Five Years After Wiper Problem First Appeared
Three months into 2026, Ford is continuing an unenviable trend from last year: issuing more recalls than any other automaker. As of this writing, the Blue Oval has issued 14 recalls, nearly three times as many as second-placed Toyota and Hyundai, with five each. Its latest concerns 2020-2022 model years, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, impacting the Ford Explorer and Escape and their Lincoln siblings, the Aviator and Corsair. Some 604,533 vehicles are afflicted with potentially faulty windshield wiper motors, a problem customers flagged back in 2021, and given the extreme weather conditions forecast in parts of the country, the risk of a crash is heightened. Why Ford Is Recalling Hundreds of Thousands of SUVs Ford View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The NHTSA recall report indicates that the wiper motor itself is not necessarily faulty, but "the motor's cover terminal may have been misaligned with the brush card terminal." The report doesn't go into much detail to explain how this may have occurred, but OEM supplier Valeo is named, indicating that the problem occurred during the components' manufacturing process, not during assembly at a Ford plant. Regardless, the problem causes a bad connection that results in a loss of electrical continuity within the motor over time. In other words, affected vehicles' wipers may work fine one day, be faulty the next, and work again the following day. Related: Ford Wants to Fix Your Car the Same Day Either way, dealers have already been notified of the problem and will replace the wiper motor at no charge to the customer, but customers are in for a long wait. While VINs are already searchable on nhtsa.gov and interim owner notifications will go out next week, remedy notifications are only expected from May 11-15. Ford Customers Have Been Waiting for a Fix for a Long Time Lincoln View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Frustratingly for anyone affected by this windshield wiper issue, the problem reared its head years ago, with an investigation into warranty claims and customer complaints already opened back in June 2021. By September 28, 2021, Ford had closed the initial investigation, concluding that "the condition did not pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety." The investigation projected that the issue would not appear in many vehicles, but in November 2025, Ford's Critical Concern Review Group was forced to reopen the investigation when it noticed an increased rate of occurrence. Since then and last month, Ford and Valeo looked at historical teardown records and warranty claims, and by February 18, the automaker identified 1,374 warranty claims related to the issue, whether total failure or intermittent failure. Despite the long wait, no accidents or injuries related to this problem have come to Ford's attention, but by the time a fix comes, some customers may have been waiting nearly five years. This Is Your First Look at the Volkswagen Golf 9
During a works council meeting yesterday, trade union IG Metall revealed the first official teaser image of the next-generation Volkswagen Golf, which will be underpinned by VW's SSP architecture. Athough at first glance there appears to be little to glean from the solitary photograph, the silhouette is a clear evolution of that of the current eighth-generation hatchback, while also taking inspiration from the ID. GTI concept. Furthermore, the image's file name includes the words "ID. Golf," confirming that VW is abandoning alphanumeric names for its EVs in favor of nomenclature that is both more traditional and more memorable. Indeed, the ID.4 is expected to become the ID. Tiguan, and now it's clear that the electric Golf will similarly evoke its gas-powered sibling, which, for the record, isn't going anywhere. Electric Golf Will Coexist with Gas Hatchback Volkswagen Last year, Volkswagen confirmed that the gas-powered Golf will continue to exist well into the next decade, and that includes the hot GTI and R variants. While some reports have suggested that the electric Golf has been delayed to the end of the decade, others have claimed that it will arrive in 2028. Either way, the eight-generation VW Golf arrived in 2019 and was already facelifted once in 2024, which means that the gas-powered hatchback will be pretty old by the time the EV alternative arrives. Therefore, another facelift is likely when the ID. Golf debuts, though it may be substantial enough for Wolfsburg to call it a new generation. Related: Volkswagen’s Tiguan R Targets Toyota’s RAV4 GR Sport With 300+ HP When that happens, we expect a whole new interior setup, with the return of physical buttons and the addition of customizable gauge cluster displays, likely including some retro themes that will call the Mk.1 Golf to mind. If the gas Golf shares the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) with the EV, we might see hybrid powertrains being introduced, too. Golf Production Site Set to Change Volkswagen View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Volkswagen ha not confirmed when the new Golf hatches will arrive, but it's been confirmed that the current 8.5 Golf will no longer be built in Wolfsburg, moving instead to Pueble, Mexico next year. This will allow the German plant to produce the EV, according to IG Metall. Both vehicles are sure to be heavily influenced by the aforementioned ID. GTI concept, which will mean a new face with full-width illumination front and rear, a sharper silhouette, and pronounced wheel arches. With 800-volt dual-motor powertrains and software developed with Rivian, the ID. Golf is sure to be an exciting proposition, but whether it will be successful remains to be seen. Hyundai Is Killing the Ioniq 6 in the U.S. — Except for One Version
Despite the popularity of Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 crossover and Ioniq 9 three-row SUV in the United States, not all Ioniq-badged EVs are doing great here. Yes, we’re looking at you, Ioniq 6 sedan. The quirky Tesla Model 3 rival has failed to convince U.S. buyers, and that is the main reason why Hyundai has decided to retire it from the market, only three years after its debut. Edmunds learned that the facelifted 2026 Ioniq 6 is not coming stateside, though with a big exception: the Ioniq 6 N performance version will be available, albeit “in limited quantities.” "Going forward, our award-winning Ioniq 6 lineup will consist of the all-new Ioniq 6 N," a Hyundai spokesperson told the publication, adding that the 2026 Ioniq 6 N will arrive later this year in the U.S. Until then, buyers can still get a 2025 Ioniq 6 sedan, as there are plenty of those left in dealer inventories. Prices start from just under $40,000, including destination. Tariffs Likely Killed the Standard Ioniq 6 in the U.S. Hyundai While Hyundai USA didn’t provide a reason for the decision to axe the standard Ioniq 6, tariffs are the most logical explanation. Unlike the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9, which are built in the U.S. at the automaker’s plant near Savannah, Georgia, the Ioniq 6 is manufactured in South Korea. In January, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened South Korea with a tariff increase from 15% to 25%. Needless to say, Hyundai would have to pass that significant cost on to consumers, and that would make the standard Ioniq 6 far too expensive for its own good. In the case of the more expensive Ioniq 6 N, though, which is also made in Korea, the tariff-related cost is probably easier to swallow by consumers. It’s worth pointing out that Hyundai will continue to sell the facelifted Ioniq 6 in Canada, as our northern neighbor doesn’t impose any tariffs to Korean-made cars under the Canada–Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA). Tariffs aside, the standard Ioniq 6 likely also owes its demise in the U.S. to the loss of federal tax credits and declining sales. While Tesla sold around 190,000 Model 3 sedans in the U.S. last year, Hyundai sold just over 10,400 Ioniq 6 sedans, down from 13,000 units in 2023, its debut year. What Are We Missing Out On? Hyundai The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 brings a series of exterior, interior and performance upgrades. The styling is the most obvious as the electric sedan gains thinner LED headlights and a restyled bumper at the front, as well as new rear lighting and an extended, more subtle ducktail spoiler that helps improve aerodynamics. A new performance-themed N Line trim is also introduced for 2026. Inside, the 2026 Ioniq 6 adopts a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel and a more user-friendly climate control layout. New additions also include the new Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) system with dual 12.3-inch displays, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as improved over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities. Hyundai is also giving the 2026 Ioniq 6 an upgraded battery pack for the Long Range model with an increased capacity of 84 kWh (the same battery that powers the go-faster Ioniq 6 N). Speaking of the Ioniq 6 N (pictured below), it gets all of the above updates plus an exclusive dual-motor AWD powertrain that delivers up to 641 horsepower in “N Grin Boost” mode, enabling a 0-60 mph time of around 3.2 seconds. Other exclusive features include the upgraded sports suspension, larger brakes, simulated shift modes, and aggressive styling. The 2026 Ioniq 6 N is expected to start around $70,000 when it goes on sale in the United States. Hyundai View the full article

Lotus Built a 5,800-Pound Plug-In Hybrid SUV
The Opposite of Simplify and Add LightnessLotus: The purveyor of lightweight sports cars and roadsters that offer a distilled driving experience. It's an automaker that prides itself on shedding every ounce possible to give the ultimate in driving engagement. Sadly, that's not the case anymore. Today, Lotus has the Emeya electric four-door GT that weighs more than an Audi RS 7, and, of all things, a battery-powered crossover in the form of the Eletre. Neither of those cars follows Lotus founder Colin Chapman's ethos of 'simplify and add lightness,' as both weigh well over 5,000 lbs. Chapman must be rolling in his grave like a twin-cam engine. Lotus Another Heavy Lotus RevealedOver in China, Eletre has added a new model to its lineup that aims to expand the crossover's appeal. Lotus has added a plug-in hybrid version to quell any fears of range anxiety, and it produces more power than the pure-electric model. The hybrid Eletre doesn't carry that name, though, at least in China. Over there, it's called the For Me, although it's likely global models will retain the Eletre nameplate. So, what's it packing? It uses a 2.0-liter turbo engine mated to a pair of synchronous motors. It then gets a 70 kWh battery pack, which is sizable for a plug-in hybrid vehicle. The combined output is rated at 939 horsepower, which is more than the Eletre R's 892 hp. 0 to 60 mph is dispatched in under 3.5 seconds, and Lotus claims a maximum range of 880 miles from a full battery and full tank. Lotus Tipping the ScalesNow, for the question of weight. According to Lotus, it weighs between 5,677 lbs and 5,787 lbs, depending on the trim chosen. The Eletre plug-in hybrid's main competitors are the Lamborghini Urus SE and the BMW XM, so it's a good time to compare their respective masses. For the Urus SE, it tips the scales at 5,520 lbs, a fair bit lighter than the Lotus, which is a phrase we'd thought we'd never say. As for the XM, that one weighs in at staggering 6,062 lbs, so at least the Lotus can claim it's 'light' for a plug-in hybrid performance crossover. Still, it's rather amusing that we now live in a world where a Lotus weighs about the same as a four-wheel drive Chevrolet Tahoe. For those curious, a Tahoe LS 4WD weighs 5,661 lbs, while an LT 4WD weighs 5,743 lbs. Lotus View the full article

Tesla Sued Again Over Model S Doors That May Not Open After Power Loss
Tesla’s Futuristic Door Handles Are Back in CourtTesla’s ongoing legal headaches surrounding its unconventional door designs aren’t going away anytime soon. Reports about trapped occupants and controversial electronic door systems have circulated for years, and another lawsuit is now adding fuel to that fire. A new class action lawsuit filed in California federal court alleges that the 2023-present Tesla Model S contains a critical safety defect involving its electrically actuated door handles. Plaintiff Robert L. Hyde claims the car becomes “not reasonably escapable” if a crash or fire causes the vehicle’s low-voltage system to fail. Because both the interior and exterior handles rely on electronic latch actuation, a power loss could prevent the flush exterior handles from extending, making it difficult for first responders to access the cabin. Hyde argues that the manual backup release for the rear doors, hidden beneath carpeting under the rear seats, is not realistically discoverable during the chaos of a crash. The Safety Debate Around Electronic Door Handles Is GrowingConcerns about electronic door releases and flush handles aren’t limited to one lawsuit. In fact, the issue has begun attracting regulatory attention overseas. Authorities in China, currently the world’s largest EV market, have reportedly pushed back against flush door designs due to safety risks posed by electronic systems failing during collisions. Those concerns are amplified by a growing list of alleged real-world incidents. Multiple reports have surfaced in recent years of occupants unable to exit Teslas during emergencies due to malfunctioning door handles or unfamiliar manual overrides. Some accounts involve parents claiming their children were trapped inside vehicles when the electronic handles failed. An early report referenced by investigators even suggested that at least 15 fatalities may have been linked to Tesla vehicles where doors reportedly failed to open during fires, claims that remain heavily debated but continue to circulate among regulators and safety advocates. The LowdownTesla’s approach to vehicle design has always prioritized minimalism and technological flair. The flush handles on the Model S were once a futuristic party trick that helped the sedan stand out in a crowded luxury segment. But the current lawsuit highlights a tension that car engineers know well: every step toward digital convenience introduces another potential failure point. Door latches are among the oldest and most safety-critical components in any vehicle. If the allegations in this lawsuit gain traction, Tesla may once again be forced to reconsider whether its sleek, software-driven solutions have pushed past the line where innovation begins to conflict with basic survivability in worst-case scenarios. Waymo Robotaxis Caught Breaking Laws Again—Are Self-Driving Cars Ready for the Real World?
Waymo’s Expansion Hits Another ControversyAutonomous taxis have been one of the most polarizing developments in the automotive world, and Waymo sits right at the center of the debate. The Alphabet-owned company has been rapidly expanding its robotaxi service across major U.S. cities, with plans to bring the technology to even more markets as it pushes the idea that your second car might eventually be replaced by an app summon. But just as the technology continues its rollout, a troubling new safety concern has surfaced, prompting regulators to pay close attention. According to a new report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), investigators are examining an incident in Austin, Texas, where a Waymo driverless taxi allegedly passed a stopped school bus with its lights activated, an action that violates Texas traffic laws. Reuters reports that the January 12 incident occurred while the bus was actively loading students. Officials say another similar event may have happened just two days later involving a special-needs school bus. The issue comes after Waymo recalled its autonomous vehicles in December following reports that its robotaxis had illegally passed stopped school buses at least 19 times since the school year began. In the most recent case, the vehicle initially stopped but then moved forward after a remote support operator reportedly indicated the bus did not have active signals. Waymo Previous Incidents Raise Questions About the SystemThis isn’t the first time Waymo has faced scrutiny involving school zones. Earlier this year, federal regulators began investigating an incident where a Waymo autonomous taxi struck a nine-year-old girl in a Santa Monica school zone. According to the company, the vehicle detected the child, who ran out from behind a double-parked SUV, and aggressively applied the brakes, slowing from around 17 mph to under 6 mph before making contact. Another detail that has raised eyebrows among critics is how Waymo’s vehicles sometimes rely on remote human assistance when they encounter unusual traffic scenarios. While the cars drive themselves most of the time, support operators can step in to help the vehicle interpret tricky situations. Reports indicate that many of these remote support workers are based overseas, including in the Philippines, where they assist with vehicles in real time. In the January school bus incident, the NTSB said the car contacted a remote operator to confirm whether the bus had active warning signals before proceeding. Source: Waymo The Lowdown on Autonomous DrivingWaymo’s robotaxi program has long divided public opinion. Some see it as the future of urban mobility, promising fewer crashes and more efficient transportation. Others remain skeptical about whether software can reliably handle the unpredictable chaos of real-world driving, especially in situations involving children, school buses, and busy urban streets. These incidents highlight a familiar truth about automotive technology: Perfection on paper rarely survives contact with reality. Autonomous systems may be packed with sensors, cameras, and machine learning algorithms, but the road is full of edge cases that are difficult to anticipate. Between pranksters exploiting robotaxi quirks and regulators probing safety incidents, Waymo’s journey toward widespread adoption still faces plenty of bumps. Until autonomous driving proves it can handle every scenario flawlessly, many enthusiasts will likely keep trusting their own right foot and steering wheel instead of a line of code. Scout Hasn’t Sold a Single Vehicle Yet — and It’s Already Facing Lawsuits
Scout's Birthing PainsScout hasn't sold a single vehicle yet, but it's already faced several legal issues. It's mainly because of the brand's plan to take the direct sales route, and dealers aren't happy. Since Scout is under the Volkswagen Auto Group, dealer groups say sales have to be routed through them, as it is part of VW. There have been suits in Colorado, Florida, and South Carolina, repeatedly filing cases against Volkswagen of America. That's on top of the other financial and legal obligations the company has. To say Scout isn't having an easy birth is a relative understatement. Scout More Dealers File CasesA dealer group in Virginia has also filed a lawsuit alleging that Volkswagen is violating standard dealer agreements. It then adds that Scout Motors is 'aiding and abetting' the bypass by going for direct sales. Cases have also been filed in New York and Connecticut against both VW and Scout Motors. One law firm representing the New York VW said, "They can't really seek refuge in this, what we call a shell game, by claiming that Scout is independent of Volkswagen. We feel we have a viable legal case to get an injunction and also damages for the lost business opportunities to the franchise dealers across the country." Scout Motors But Tesla and Rivian Have Direct Sales, Right?Well, yes, but not all states allow it. Wind back the clock a few years, and we go to Tesla's direct sales model, which faced similar legal hurdles as Scout Motors at the time. That said, Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid never had established franchise networks, which somewhat eased their burden. Mind you, it was still an uphill battle to get it done, but it was a win for them nonetheless. However, Scout's case is different. Volkswagen owns the Scout brand, and the German automaker already has a well-established network of franchises across the U.S. The dealer groups argue that they have been losing business due to deposits and reservations. Plaintiffs have repeatedly mentioned that allowing direct sales sets a dangerous precedent. One law firm told Automotive News, "It's Volkswagen today, and all manufacturers watch each other. So if manufacturers saw that dealers didn't stand up together, push back and assert their rights, it allows the other manufacturers to say, 'Hey look, Volkswagen was able to do it, so we can do it with impunity.' It's not just a case that's important for VW dealers, but it's equally important for dealers of all line makes." Scout Motors Scout Motors isn't BudgingDespite the suits filed against it, Scout is determined to employ its direct sales method one way or another. "If you look at 21st-century brands and what they’re able to deliver, that’s what they do. We can create the stores, and we can create the brand experience," said Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh. While several states are challenging the direct sales model, Scout can firmly plant its flag in Colorado. The state has granted the company its own dealer license to allow them to sell vehicles with no middleman. That said, the approval is more of a symbolic move as the license expires in October 2026, and the company will only start selling cars in 2027. Still, it sets a precedent and allows Scout to put its foot in the door for its sales method. Scout Motors View the full article

Ford's Large SUVs Had Best February Sales in 26 Years
Ford Motor Company reported its February 2026 U.S. sales this week, with the company reporting an overall decline of 5.5% relative to February 2025. Including Lincoln, Ford sold 149,962 vehicles in February, down from 158,675 a year ago. The disappearance of models like the Ford Edge crossover and F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck didn’t help Ford’s cause, but the manufacturer did see a significant increase in demand for its large SUVs. In fact, Ford models in this category registered their best February sales in 26 years. Large Ford SUVs Thrive Ford While Ford’s smaller SUVs struggled last month, the same can’t be said of the larger Expedition and Explorer. Here’s a look at Ford’s SUV sales for February 2026. The only smaller Ford SUV that had a strong February was the Bronco Sport. Following the Edge, the Ford Escape also went out of production late last year, which clearly impacted February’s sales figures. The Expedition and Explorer had a great February, with the Explorer being the fastest-growing Ford SUV when compared to last year. In 2025, the Explorer was the best-selling three-row SUV in the country, and buyers still can’t get enough of its powerful V6 and bold looks. The F-Series managed 49,160 sales last month, down by 13.92%, but this was still Ford’s best-selling model line by far. Ford Has Abandoned The Budget Segment—But That Will Change Ford Over the last few years, Ford has discontinued nearly all its cheapest models. These include the Fiesta, EcoSport, Edge, and Escape. The brand hasn’t had a small sedan or hatchback on sale for years, leaving buyers with nothing but the Maverick if they want a new Ford at under $30,000. While the success of its large SUVs and trucks is expected to continue, Ford is missing out on a crucial segment of the market, where brands like Toyota, Kia, and Honda are thriving. Ford dealers said recently they want a sedan and crossover at under $30,000, so it’s just as well that Ford is planning five new affordable models by 2030. This group of cheap Fords will include a midsize electric pickup, more efficient hybrids, and a possible new sedan. They’ll answer the need for simpler, cheaper new cars at a time when average car prices are regularly exceeding $50,000. This shift in strategy can also rekindle Ford’s image as a true people’s brand. Related: Ford Updates Plans: 5 New Affordable Vehicles by 2030 View the full article

New Electric BMW 3 Series Debuts This Month with Big Power
The second car built on the innovative Neue Klasse architecture has been teased, and BMW has confirmed that the new i3, or electric 3 Series, will debut on March 18. In a post shared to Instagram, the German automaker has confirmed that the new i3 will have an illuminated front-end, with LEDs framing the face of the electric sedan. While the first Neue Klasse product, the BMW iX3, has narrow, vertically-aligned 'kidneys', the i3 will have horizontal kidneys between its headlights, helping set the sedan apart from its similarly underpinned crossover. But as BMW's contemporary cars show, looks matter little. What can we expect under the skin? 2027 BMW i3: Loads of Range and Plenty of Power To begin with, the new i3 range is expected to be offered in 50 xDrive flavor, mirroring the iX3. Although yet to be confirmed, we assume that the same dual-motor setup will carry over to the sedan, offering 464 horsepower and 479 lb-ft. We also expect the iX3's 108kWh nickel manganese-cobalt battery to carry over, though the sedan's lower stance and more aerodynamic shape are expected to contribute to greater range (the iX3's 800-volt architecture delivers 500 miles from a single charge and enables charging speeds of up to 400kW). These figures will be closely matched by the first electric Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which has already been teased. BMW/Instagram Later down the line, lesser i3 trims will be offered, as will a range-topping electric M3 with as much as 800 hp. BMW has already begun manufacturing pre-production models at its plant in Munich in preparation for full production in the second half of 2026, so the i3 should go on sale here before the end of 2026. When it arrives, buyers will have plenty of choices. Several BMW i3 Options Have Already LeakedRelated: BMW, Hyundai, and Nissan Top the 2026 World Car Awards According to a reliable insider on the BimmerPost forum, both the i3 and its 3 Series gas-powered sibling will have several color options, though the latter will have more. The i3 is reportedly going to be offered in Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Brooklyn Grey, Space Silver, and Le Castellet Blue, while the gas 3er will get the same choice plus Mineral White, Fire/Vegas Red, Polarized Grey, Ocean Wave Blue, and Eucalyptus Green. Inside, buyers will reportedly be able to choose from grey, green, white, and black themes. Expect the combustion 3 Series to arrive shortly after the i3, likely in the summer. Elsewhere, a leak on the BMW USA online shop revealed that the German automaker will reveal a mild-hybrid M350, a new iX4 crossover, the new X5, and a revised 7 Series. All of these are expected to hit dealer floors by the end of the year, along with an all-wheel-drive M2. SH Proshots/Autoblog View the full article

Dodge Could Sell a Hellcat and a 900-HP Electric Charger Side by Side
Can a gas-powered Charger Hellcat muscle car coexist with a 900-hp Charger Banshee EV in Dodge's lineup? Recent reports and remarks from Dodge's CEO seem to suggest they can, even though both of these models were written off entirely not that long ago. We recently learned from a new report that the glorious Hellcat V8 may eventually find its way into the engine bay of the eighth-generation Charger, as Dodge has apparently green-lighted the Charger Hellcat for the 2028 model year. While the insider information hasn't been confirmed yet by Dodge, previous comments from top-level Stellantis executives point in that direction. Don't Dismiss the Banshee Before Dodge Does Dodge While welcoming the Hellcat V8 back into Charger does make sense in the current market environment where EVs are losing ground to ICEs in the U.S.—especially when it comes to enthusiast cars—one thing we didn't expect is Dodge giving the Charger Daytona SRT Banshee electric muscle car a second chance—well, technically, a first chance as it was shelved before even reaching showrooms. You may remember that the Charger Daytona SRT Banshee halo car, which was supposed to become the all-electric successor to the Hellcat, was reportedly canceled before reaching production, mirroring the fate of the Ram 1500 REV all-electric truck. But in a recent interview with Canada's Driving, Dodge CEO Matt McAlear suggested that the fate of the Charger Daytona SRT Banshee is not yet sealed. "Banshee is never completely dead. I mean, SRT has never… we'll see. I mean, everything is, uh, is all about timing," the executive noted. That's an interesting statement and it may hint at Dodge waiting for better market conditions to launch the flagship Banshee. Or maybe not; maybe what Dodge is waiting for is to have both the supercharged Hellcat V8-powered Charger in the lineup and the Charger Daytona SRT Banshee as its all-electric sidekick. According to McAlear, "one of the best things for the EV's powertrain will be having the [gas-fueled Hurricane] sitting right next to it on the showroom floor… the ability to compare and to test-drive both back-to-back, I think will be unique versus some of the other competitors." Former Stellantis CEO's Departure Gave Dodge More Powertrain Flexibility Dodge The executive also said that the brand did not make "any changes to the plan" after the departure of former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. "The only thing we've changed is the mix from a production standpoint," McAlear said, referring to the addition of the Hurricane six-cylinder gas engine to the Charger lineup and the axing of the 496-hp Charger Daytona R/T entry-level EV variant. Currently, the only all-electric Charger on sale is the 670-hp Daytona Scat Pack and Scat Pack Plus. The 900-hp tri-motor Banshee, with its 800-volt architecture, would be a big step up both from the 400-volt, dual-motor Charger Daytona Scat Pack and the rumored 777-hp Charger Hellcat. Speaking of Tavares, Dodge's CEO noted that his departure "allowed us to be more flexible and to get back to offering multiple powertrains," and that the powertrain lineup available today in the Charger "was always the plan from the beginning." Here's hoping that a Charger Hellcat is also part of that plan; and even if it's not, we wouldn't mind seeing it happen as an afterthought. View the full article

Honda Prelude Sales Are Neck and Neck With Subaru BRZ
Honda reported its U.S. February sales results this week, with the brand posting a modest 0.6% year-to-date increase over 2025, excluding Acura. The company sold 97,226 vehicles in February and has accumulated 186,801 sales for the year so far. Models like the CR-V, Civic, and Accord continued to lead the way for Honda, while on the other side of the spectrum, the still-fresh Prelude coupe moved just 299 units in February. While that represents a fraction of Honda’s total sales, the Prelude is actually on track to meet its annual sales target. It’s also keeping pace with one of its closest—and much cheaper—Japanese rivals. Related: 2026 Honda Prelude First Drive Review: The Ideal Entry Point into Car Enthusiast Culture Honda Prelude and Subaru BRZ Tied in 2026 Sales 2026 Honda Prelude Honda View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Across the first two months of the year, the Prelude and BRZ each tallied sales of 515 models. In February, the Prelude actually outsold the BRZ by 22 units. For all the complaints about the Prelude’s high starting price ($42,000) and so-so performance (200 horsepower), it’s still keeping pace with one of the only other two-door compact sports coupes. The BRZ starts at a much more attainable $35,860, makes a stronger 228 hp, and comes with a manual gearbox. It’s a purer sports car, but it’s also not as premium-feeling or well-equipped as the newer Prelude. Honda said it aims to sell just 4,000 Preludes annually, which works out to roughly 333 units per month. It nearly got there in February, despite that being a generally slow month for car sales. Harsh weather and tighter budgets after the year-end holiday season often impact car sales early in a new year. All things considered, the Prelude looks set to meet Honda’s modest sales target. Other Honda Sales Highlights Honda CR-V TrailSport Honda View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Elsewhere in Honda’s lineup, the CR-V continued to be the brand’s biggest seller, with 31,625 sales in February. It was followed by the Civic (18,225), Accord (10,966), Pilot (10,460), and HR-V (9,983). The automaker achieved an all-time February sales record for hybrids, with 30,671 sold. This includes the Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Prelude hybrids. Passenger car sales were up by 8.9%, while the new Passport continued a great run, with 4,746 units sold. That’s a 35.7% increase over February 2025, making the Passport Honda’s fastest-growing model last month. It was also the Passport’s best-ever February, and the TrailSport trims are still accounting for over 80% of the model mix. Major supply issues hit Honda hard in 2025, but it’s been a promising start to the year for the Japanese marque. Hybrid sales are up, but the decision to boost production of cheaper non-hybrid models is also reaping rewards early this year. Finally, the Prelude is close to delivering on Honda's targets. A hybrid without a manual may not thrill fans of the older Preludes, but the new one is a stylish, premium coupe that has successfully transitioned the nameplate into the modern era. 2027 Honda Insight Returns as an Electric Crossover
The first-generation Honda Insight was a two-door, two-seat hybrid liftback, and its second was a four-door liftback with space for five. In its third generation, it turned into a four-door sedan, and now Honda's Insight has changed again, with the 2027 Insight revealed as a four-door crossover that's now all-electric. Another big change is that, while America has had access to previous models, the new model is only available in Japan, though other global markets are likely to get access eventually. The U.S. probably never will because, although Honda hasn't said so, the 2027 Insight appears to be based on China's Dongfeng Honda-produced e:NS2. 2027 Honda Insight Performance Honda View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Honda hasn't revealed everything there is to know about the Insight just yet, but it did say that the single front-mounted motor produces 229 lb-ft of torque, which matches the figure of the e:NS2. Assuming nothing has changed, that means 201 horsepower. While those figures are relatively low for an EV, Honda claims the vehicle is light and promises "exciting, nimble handling." Honda has also confirmed a driving range of 311 miles on the WLTC cycle, which is more forgiving than the EPA's test procedures. Interestingly, China's e:NS2 gets 339 miles (on the CLTC cycle) from its 68.8kWh battery pack. 136,000 Ram ProMaster Vans Under Investigation For Steering Failure
Ram’s practical ProMaster van is under investigation for a loss of power steering assistance. According to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 19 complaints have been received for intermittent or total failure of the power steering system in certain examples of the van. Considering the sheer size and weight of these vans—especially when fully loaded—a sudden loss of power steering assistance could be a major hazard. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has opened a preliminary evaluation to find the root cause and assess the scope of the problem. What Ram ProMaster Models Are Affected? Stellantis Affected models are from the 2022 and 2023 model years, and include all variants of the Ram ProMaster: 1500, 2500, and 3500. Those numbers represent the light-, medium-, and heavy-duty derivatives of the ProMaster, with the 3500 offering the best payload capacity of the three. Overall, the estimated population of affected vans is 136,666. The ProMaster EV is not mentioned in the investigation. According to the complaints, the increase in steering effort can lead to a loss of vehicle control, which is a scary prospect in a vehicle that can weigh over 5,000 lbs. When fully loaded with cargo or passengers, these vans have a maximum Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of over 9,000 lbs. Several reports indicate that water intrusion into the electric connectors of the electric power steering control module could be to blame. Stellantis One ProMaster driver from Connecticut said a corrosion of the wire harness due to water entering the power steering rack caused his power steering to fail. “Driving on highway and power steering gave out without warning. Had to pull to the side of the road. Safety at risk,” said the driver. Another customer reported waiting for 56 days for a part to replace their steering, due to the number of other ProMaster drivers needing the same part. Interestingly, there's another open investigation for a loss of power steering on a Ram. This older investigation affects 2013-2016 Ram 1500 pickups, but it's not known if that issue is linked to the ProMaster's problem in any way. Related: Massive Ram ProMaster Recall For Fire Risk Could Impact Fleets Nationwide What Owners Should Do Now Stellantis While recalls or Do Not Drive alerts have not been issued for the steering issue, it’s possible that the investigation will end with one or the other. In the meantime, anyone driving a 2022 or 2023 Ram ProMaster should exercise caution. If a detected loss of power steering occurs, especially at high speeds, it’s advisable to slow down and pull the vehicle over. Drivers should also look out for the following warning lights/messages on the dashboard, which accompany a loss of power steering assistance in some cases: ECS needs serviceHill assist needs serviceEngine needs serviceFWC system needs serviceThe ProMaster should be immediately checked by a technician if any of these warning messages appear. There’s no timeline on exactly when the investigation will be completed, but ProMaster owners are advised to check the NHTSA site regularly for any further updates. Winter Storm Warning: 20 Inches of Snow and 40 MPH Winds Threaten Western Highways
A Treacherous Commute AheadThe Western United States is bracing for a severe weather shift as a powerful Pacific storm system pushes inland. With Winter Storm Warnings now active across multiple states, drivers navigating high elevation routes are facing a formidable combination of heavy snow and high winds. Forecasts indicate that up to 20 inches of snow could bury key mountain passes, making travel over the next few days exceedingly dangerous, if not entirely impossible. High Winds and Whiteout ConditionsBeyond the sheer volume of snow, the accompanying wind is what will truly test motorists. Gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph are expected to sweep across the Great Basin and the Intermountain West. For high-profile vehicles and drivers on exposed highways, these severe crosswinds pose a significant hazard. The combination of falling snow and gale-force winds will inevitably lead to sudden whiteout conditions in the mountains, reducing visibility to zero in a matter of seconds. Impact on Mountain Passes and InfrastructureThe Cascades, the Wasatch Back, and the Nevada mountain ranges are in the direct path of this system. Major arteries traversing these regions will likely see chain controls implemented rapidly, and outright highway closures are highly probable as road crews struggle to keep up with accumulation rates. Motorists planning to cross the Rockies or navigate the Greater Lake Tahoe area must prepare for extensive delays. The rapidly dropping temperatures will also flash freeze wet roads, creating layers of black ice beneath the fresh powder. Preparation and Alternative RoutesFor those who must travel, ensuring your vehicle is equipped for extreme winter duty is paramount. Winter tires with severe snow service ratings, a dedicated emergency kit, and a full tank of gas are essential for tackling these conditions. However, the safest course of action is to reevaluate travel plans and seek alternative routes that avoid the highest elevations entirely until the storm passes and road-clearing operations are complete.
